In the past twenty years, almost 4,000 research studies have confirmed what most middle grades educators have always known—that children between the ages of 10 and 15 are a unique group of learners with physical, cognitive and social characteristics that demand special attention!  Unfortunately, many middle grades educators lack a basic understanding of these characteristics---and of their implications for middle grades learning communities.

This resource---created by the National Middle School Association---helps to bridge that knowledge gap by presenting the "Fundamentals for Student Success in the Middle Grades."  Broken into three parts---the characteristics of young adolescents, National recommendations for middle grades practice, and research supporting the need for unique middle grades learning environments---this site is a valuable tool for any middle grades principal or teacher needing a "refresher" on the characteristics of effective middle grades education.
