Allen Ellzey

aellzey@wcpss.net

919-363-1870

Allen is the current principal of Salem Middle School.  He has served in this position for the past two years, leading efforts to design school wide structures for remediation and enrichment of students.  During his tenure, a school-wide "working lunch" period has been created where content area teachers meet individual learning needs.  Also, a guided study elective into which struggling students cycle each quarter has been designed and a PLC Facilitator position dedicated to meeting the unquie needs of diverse learning teams has been established.  These efforts are helping Salem to answer the critical question, "What do we do when students don't learn?"

Bill---2006 North Carolina Regional Teacher of the Year and author of The Power of Professional Conversations---is a founding member of the Salem Middle School faculty.  Working on a highly functioning sixth grade learning team that he openly credits with his continued growth as an educator, Bill has helped to shape many of the fundamental beliefs that drive Salem Middle School.  He has also written extensively about professional learning communities as a Senior Fellow of the Teacher Leaders Network and as a regular columnist for the National Staff Development Council.

Parry Graham

fgraham@wcpss.net

919-388-5240

Parry currently serves as an assistant principal at Cedar Forks Elementary School in the Wake County Public School System---a position he accepted after completing an administrative internship at Salem Middle School during the 2003-2004 school year.  As a member of Salem's original faculty, Parry helped to define structures that allowed teachers to reflect on instruction and engage in peer observations.  Parry was also particularly influential in conversations surrounding the development of Salem's original mission statement, a process that he regularly describes as one of the most powerful experiences of his professional career.  Recognizing the potential that professional learning communities have to drive change in education, Parry completed his doctoral dissertation on the impact that learning communities have on teacher development.  He continues to explore the differences between the development of learning communities in middle and elementary schools in his current position, writing extensively about his experiences.

Tad Sherman

tsherman@wcpss.net

919-363-1870

Drawn to the collaborative nature of the Salem community, Tad joined the Salem faculty early in 2004 as a sixth grade math and science teacher.  Since joining the staff, Tad has played a key leadership role at the sixth grade level---serving as a bridge between the language arts and math learning teams.  His ability to quickly identify differences and to define solutions make him a consensus builder who has earned the respect of his peers.  He has also played a critical role in the creation of grade-level data analysis and remediation strategies in mathematics---which serve as a model for teams throughout the Salem community.  Because of his experiences at Salem, Tad has chosen to pursue a career in administration, enrolling in a district-level MSA program.  He hopes to use the knowledge that he has gained over the past three years as a lever for change in future positions.
